Solutions

Ans 1 (b):

The black soils are concentrated over the Deccan Lava tract which extends over parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The black soils are generally clayey, deep and impermeable. On the uplands they have a comparatively lower fertility than on the low lands. Chemically the black soils consist of lime, iron, magnesium and alumina. They also contain potash. But they lack in phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter.

Ans 2 (b):

The west coast of India and the East Himalayan region get high rainfall from the south-west monsoon in summer. The eastern coast of India, particularly the Tamil Nadu coast, remains relatively dry during the south-west monsoon. Coromandel Coast (south-eastern coast) gets rainfall mainly from N-E monsoon.

Ans 3 (c):

Ans 4 (a):

Ans 5 (c):

Ans 6 (d):

Mahabaleshwar (1438m) is in the middle section of Western Ghats in Maharashtra whereas Satmala Hills are near Gujarat border. Matheran (800m) is near Mumbai (about 90km) while Gawilgarh Hills are near MP border.

Ans 7 (c):

The rising air at the equator cools down after reaching the upper parts of the atmosphere. It spreads out towards the poles. The air stars sinking near 30 degree N and 30 degree S latitudes and piles up there. Thus, high pressure belts are produce in these regions. They are called SUB TROPICAL HIGH PRESSURE BELTS or horse latitudes. The subsiding air is relatively dry, because its moisture has already been released near the equator. Consequently, the world’s tropical deserts are located in this belt.

Ans 8 (b):

Isotherms are more regular and widely spaced in Southern hemisphere. They bend slightly while crossing from land masses to oceans and vice versa.

Ans 9 (d):

Winds are mainly produced by winds. When blowing winds impart their energy to the water in the form of friction and pressure on the smooth surface of the sea, waves are produced. The size and force of waves depends on three factors: velocity of the wind, duration of the wind and the distance over which the wind can blow unhindered (fetch).

Ans 10 (b):

The Gaza Strip is a small territory on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, that borders Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the east and north.
